Ireland and Australia draw at Croke Park

Ireland scored a late try by Brian O'Driscoll which earned them a 20-all draw against Australia on Sunday at Croke Park in Dublin Ireland

Australia got an almost perfect start as Ronan O'Gara threw a pass to Brian O'Driscoll which went to ground and the ball was picked up by Wallabies winger Drew Mitchell who ran in Australia's first try untouched in the second minute.

Ireland had to play catch up rugby after the early try and trailed 6-10 at the break. Matt Giteau booted a penalty which took Australia to 6-13.

Ireland then got themselves right back in the match with a converted try from Tommy Bowe.

The scores were however not level for long as Rocky Elsom powered over in the corner and Matt Giteau converted to put the Wallabies 7 points back in front.

Two minutes from time Tommy Bowe looked to have scored a try but the TMO ruled that he had not got the ball down.

A scrum followed and Brian O'Driscoll appeared with the ball and scored the try which when converted drew the scores level.

O'Driscoll's most notable contribution on his 100th international appearance until then had been the third-minute handling error that led to the first of Australia's two tries.

O'Driscoll fumbled a pass by O'Gara to give Drew Mitchell a simple chance to run in unchallenged and touch down for his 18th international try.

Matt Giteau landed a simple conversion but O'Gara reduced the deficit with two penalties before Giteau made it 10-6 at halftime.

Ireland tied the scores at 13-13 in the 56th minute when Bowe touched down for a converted try but Wallabies captain Rocky Elsom, who played in Dublin for Leinster last year, looked to have earned his team victory when he charged in at the corner midway through the second half.

An Australia victory looked inevitable when referee Jonathan Kaplan refused to award Bowe a second try with three minutes left because he was not sure the wing had grounded the ball.

But the Ireland players kept their nerve and, from a five-meter scrum, O'Driscoll went over.
